High-Frequency Terrain Analysis (HFTA) Information

Special note -- 25 April 2016

The Canadian GeoBase mapping website is no longer in service, and the procedures in this tutorial for downloading and processing Canadian DEMs are no longer up to date.

Natural Resources Canada has replaced the previous DEM maps with CDEM maps, now ordered online through www.GeoGratis.ca.

These maps are in the .tif file format, which is not compatible with the 32-bit MicroDEM application used in this manual. This requires the user to download the 64-bit MicroDEM application (download the .EXE file) from the MicroDEM download page which is .tif compatible and will process the CDEM file.

The author has not updated the HFTA manual to reflect these changes and has personally not yet tested and documented the process.  There is however an attached document indicating how to obtain the new CDEM’s from GeoGratis.

I have been advised that this new site and process works, and one can carry on with their HFTA analysis. I hope this is the case and hope to revise the manual before 2016 year-end.
